Fall is on the way!

Fall is my favorite season. I love the cool, crisp weather, the colors of the turning leaves, the chilly weekend nights around a fire. I am definitely a fall weather person. I love to wear jeans and sweaters, with boots and scarves. Or, for just doing stuff around the house, a pair of sweats. lol. I also love to cook, can and bake. And, even though fall hasn't officially started, I started feeling the urge for fall foods a couple of weeks ago. So, my Mabon class (held last night at the shop) was right up my alley.

For class, I made a Quick Mabon Cake, and served apple cider (my favorite). I would've liked to have done more, but I was unable to get the day off, as I usually do. If I would've had the time, I would've made some Cheesy Potato Soup and Mabon Cider. So, I guess I'll just have to settle for making it this weekend, along with some fresh bread. If anyone is interested, I have updated the Mabon page with the recipes from the class. I will probably use pull out a couple of these recipes to make my dishes for the Mabon picnic we have planned for Sunday the 20th. We have decided to have a community picnic to celebrate in a fashion similar to the old ways. We are doing an old fashioned potluck, taking donations of canned goods for the local food bank, and just plan on enjoying the day together. We will even be holding an open circle just past noon. I can't wait. I'll be sure to post photos.

Happy belated Lughnasadh

I didn't get a chance to post it yesterday, but Happy Lughnasadh! Yesterday was spent in the age old tradition of turning harvested grain into a harvest feast. After the Kitchen Witchery class on Tuesday, we cooked up the idea (ha ha! Pun totally intended) to have a Lughnasadh celebration. Mrs. L offered to have it at her house, and we used one of my model menu plans and expanded from there. Here is what was served:

Sweet Corn Chowder
Cornish Pasties
Chicken Salad
Orange and Avocado salad
Braided Egg Bread
Full Moon Cornbread
Bread and rice pudding with Blackberry-Honey with bourbon
Vegan chocolate cake with salted caramel icing
French silk pie

We made it a potluck, and the invite was put out on facebook. We did a circle in the back yard, and then headed in for dinner, once we were finished. Everyone arrived by 7, and we wrapped up around 10. We had a great time, and a good turn out for such short notice. Besides the good food, there was lots of good talk. It has been years since I have been part of a good Sabbat celebration, and I am so blessed to be included in this one. I hope there will be many more. My only regret was that my phone was really low on battery, and I didn't get any photos. :(

For my portion of the meal, I made the Cornish Pasties (or as we having been calling them, Cornish Pixies), Bread Egg Bread which was used on the alter, Full Moon Cornbread, and the Bread and Rice pudding and sauce. I started baking at 9 am, and finally shut the oven off around 5:30. It's been forever since I have spent an entire day baking, and it felt good, I started to feel like my old self. So, all in all, it was a great day all round.

Lughnasadh/Lammas Class

This evening's class was small, but fun. We didn't have as big of a turn out as last class, but we hope to have more next time. However, we still had a blast, and some really yummy food:

In this class we covered the full moon and Lughnasadh. Before the class, I made up some salsa and homemade chips (recipes found on the Lughnasadh/Lammas page). In stead of regular salt, I used pink Himalayan salt to season both the salsa and chips. It was a great addition to the flavor. In class, I made one of my favorite recipes, Full Moon Cornbread (recipe on the Full Moon page). It has been forever since I've made, but now I wonder why I ever stopped. YUM! Everyone loved it, there were no left overs:

New reading material

As I told the youngest, you can never have too many books, especially if they are cookbooks. So, I think I will be starting a page for my vast collection of books, and I will probably write small reviews of them. Yeah. That sounds like a good idea. lol.

Laptops, books and kitties! Oh my!

A few months back, my trusty laptop took a nose dive. The fan died. I ordered a new one, and tried to fix it, but that was all for not, as the new fan didn't work either. So, for the past couple of months I have been borrowing the youngest daughter's laptop to post, and to make the lesson plans for my Kitchen Witchery classes. I decided last week that I just couldn't take it any longer and I had to find something new. So, I started searching, and finally decided that I wanted something small, versatile, and able to function in any manner I needed. So, I decided that I wanted a Microsoft Surface 3.

It arrived yesterday, and so far I am loving it. I made sure to get the keyboard and the pen. The only issue I have had is that the bluetooth portion of the pen isn't syncing with the tablet. However, I did contact Microsoft, and they will be sending me a new one. But, I did place my order on Amazon, and decided that while I was placing a new order that I might as well add to my book collection. So, I ordered the new Lughnasadh book from their new Sabbats series.

It never hurts to have another book, right? ;) I can't wait to dive into this one over the next week, before my next class. I really loved their first series, and this one is shaping up to be just as good. This is my third book from the new series, and I definitely plan on collecting all of them.

Speaking of my next class, I have the lesson plan in the bag, and will be adding the recipes to the Lammas/Lughnasadh tab before the class. I have some very yummy things planned, and lots of suggestions for everyone. Keep an eye open for that.

Now, for the third part of my title: Kitties! What would a post be without a photo of my little hellion familiar? Little Miss Onnie is such a little joy. She is still coming out of her shell, but she's made big progress since coming home. She has developed a fondness for attacking my pant legs and biting them while I am trying to prepare her food. My Kitchen Witchery

Happy Late Mid-Summer! It's been a couple of busy weeks, so I am very late in writing this post. I have a bit of exciting news. As I mentioned previously, I have been attending fellowship at a pagan/spiritual shop near home called Blessed Be (Facebook link on the sidebar), for over a year now, and when the owner that conducts the fellowships asked for volunteers to help host some, I jumped right in. As I am a solitary kitchen witch, it was only natural that my fellowships/classes be on cooking and kitchen witchery. We have started arranging the classes so that I can focus on the Sabbats. My first class was on my birthday last week, and focused on Litha/Mid-Summer/Summer Solstice. Granted, my birthday is a few days after, but it still worked out great. In the class I made Fried Honey Cakes (aka: Fairy Cakes), and before the class I made Serendipity Cookies and fresh Lavender-Honey Lemonade. It was fun and yummy. I also put together a hand out for everyone that included the recipes, a menu planning suggestion, and some decorating/tablescaping ideas. Here are a few pics from the event:

As I had to use a small deep fryer, the Fairy Cakes came out more like funnel cake (but who doesn't like funnel cake, right?), and we had the honey-nutmeg dipping sauce for them. The Serendipity Cookies were awesome, as usual. I will be posting the recipes for these items on my new pages (listed above, directly below the header).

This Lavender-Honey Lemonade was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be making more of it, that's for sure. During the class, I placed out part of my pagan cookbook collection, along with my personal cookbook. Also, during the class, we touched on how to incorporate herbs with magical properties into your cooking to help weave magic into your everyday life, and mundane activities. I am really looking forward to the next class, which will be July 28th. For this class, I will be covering Lammas, and the Full Moon. I am still in the process of putting together everything for the class, but after the class I will post an update, the recipes on the companion blog, and have the hand out available for anyone interested.

In other news, my newest familiar has finally come home. However, she has brought a companion with her. Her mommy:

We have welcomed Miss Sophie Anne into our home. My best friend was having problems trying find a home for her, partly because she was a stray, and because she wasn't a kitten. I talked it over with the hubby, and it only made sense that since I had put money and time into making sure she was healthy, along with all of her babies, that we might as well take her in and love her. So, here she is, and here she will stay. She is such a quiet and loving thing, she is hardly any trouble. Well, except when she is chasing the dogs through the house to protect her baby. lol. But, we are working with her to get her to stop, and understand that the dogs really just aren't interested in eating her offspring. lol. But, we are getting there.

A bit of house keeping

Wow! It's dusty in here. I can't believe I have left this poor blog sitting on the shelf for so long. Especially since the youngest daughter and I have found a local pagan shop that holds fellowship twice a month, and we have been going for the past year. So, I guess there is a bit of catching up to do. So, where to begin? Ah, yes. In my last post, I talked about my new familiar, Ceri. Unfortunately, my little Ceri passed away from Feline Leukemia in October of 2013. We were unaware that she had had it since birth. We were devastated to lose her. May the Goddess watch over her.

May 31, 2012 - October 9, 2013

Because I was so heart broken, my husband decided that I needed a new familiar to help me get over losing Ceri so soon. He was set on the fact that I needed a black cat, and nothing else would do. We also agreed that no matter what, we would make sure she was healthy, and she would not die of the Feline Leukemia that took little Ceri. So, we took a couple of weeks to search the local cat shelters to find a new family member. We did find a beautiful little female. Her name was Jelly. We brought her home on December 31, 2013 and I named her Jellybean. We made sure she was well taken care of, and had our vet check her over to make sure. She was my loving baby. If you wanted to find her, all you had to do was look for me. She was with me every minute I was home, forever in my lap, especially when I was knitting. So, it was especially hard when she got sick in June of 2014. We took her to the vet and found that she had FIP, which is always fatal. This devastated me beyond words. May the Goddess hold her close.

Jellybean

April 1, 2013 - June 7, 2014

After Jellybean, I made the decision that I would not take another familiar for a very long time. I was holding that very well, until a couple of months ago, when I got a text message from my best friend. Even then, I tried to hold my ground. See, it seems she had taken in a pregnant stray cat to keep her from having her babies in the extreme freezing weather. I would've held to my decision if there hadn't been a tiny black kitten among the three little ones born the morning of March 8th, and well my best friend knew it. I even told her no for the first day. By the second day, my convictions were faltering. I talked it over with my husband, and he told me no, as he didn't want to see me hurt again so soon. But, I broke down his walls, granted it took me a couple of days. I agreed to take the little one, but only after she, her siblings and her mama were checked over by the vet, and all were given a clean bill of health. I even said I would pay the vet bill. So, here we are, nine weeks and two vet visits later. 

Meet Onyx Moon, Onnie for short. Since my best friend loves me so much, she has agreed to keep her until all of her vet visits are taken care of, and she has had all of her shots, just in case. And, in case you are wondering, my nephew picked out the name Onyx, as he named her sister Ruby, and her brother Emerald. He's only six, and a big Mine Craft fan. lol. However, this little kitty reminds me so much of my beloved Anck Su Namun (Moonie for short). Her fur (length and coloring) are so much like Moonie's was, and she even has her disposition, so far. My husband is hoping her attitude will change, as Moonie was very mean to everyone but me. lol. She reminds me so much of Moonie, that both me and my BFF slipped and called her by that name today. lol. Little Onnie will be able to come home to us in a couple of months. Until then, I spend time over at my BFF's house every Saturday.

In the rest of my world, not much else is going on. The previously mentioned "teenager with an attitude" has since become "full time college student with 2 part time jobs", and has moved out on her own. The youngest has taken up the post of "teenager with an attitude". She is too much like her mama, and it just depends on my mood as to whether she gets in trouble, or gets a high five. lol. As I said above, the youngest and I have been attending fellowship twice a month for the past year, and open circle when they host one. I figured it would be good for the youngest, as she decided to follow the pagan path when she turned 13, and I thought the topics discussed and the classed held would help her to better understand her choice. And, I thought I could also benefit from it, as I am a self taught, solitary practitioner of about 25 years. A little extra knowledge, and some extra company have never hurt anyone. Other than that, everything else is pretty much just every day life. So, until next time..... Merry Meet! And hope to see you again soon.

Keeping the faith alive

It was six years ago come tomorrow, that I wrote the post "Have Faith and She will provide". The Goddess has provided very well for us. However, this year, we ran into a bit of trouble. After over a year of my husband working a decent job for non-profit company for a less than decent wage, they lost the majority of the grant money. Due to this, his entire department was let go. Now, this wasn't the first time my husband had been laid off, and just like the other times, we knew we would deal with it. But, after nearly seven months, things were starting to get a little desperate. He finally got a call for an interview at a Big Box warehouse very near to home. When I heard this, I decided it was time to add to my box. When I opened my box, as I have done before, I found it empty this time. I couldn't believe my eyes. Where had the money gone? Since the box was covered in a healthy amount of dust (I'm a little more than ashamed to admit this), it's obvious that the box hadn't been disturbed in some time, so I was very upset and very disappointed that it was gone. I realized that maybe this was why we were having a bit of a bad time, and decided that it was time to turn it all around. I immediately added the dollar I had in my hand, whispered my chant, closed the box back up and placed it back on the shelf. The next day, my husband informed me the next day that he had a call back. As soon as he told this, I told him about what happened with my box. A bit later, I asked him if had a dollar to go in the box. He rounded up one, and in the box it went. The next day, we got news that he had the job! We have been in much better shape since, but we are still catching up. Again, I am thankful for all the blessings bestowed on our family, and pray to the Goddess for the continued good fortune. And, with the eldest daughter finishing up senior year of high school, and preparing for her freshman year at her college of choice (a non-too-cheap liberal arts college), we're going to need all the blessings we can get. ;)

Oh! And after a couple of years of being without a familiar, I decided it was time to hand pick one to raise from a kitten. Please meet my new baby:

This is Cerridwen, Ceri for short. She was born May 30th, and is a mischievous tortoise shell kitten, with caramel colored eyes. She has been an endless source of entertainment for us, and an endless source of frustration for the elder cat in house, Vinny. lol. But, he deals with her as best as he can. So, here is to hoping that I can try to keep up with this blog more often.

Happy Samhain!

Merry meet! I hope this holiday finds everyone well. We have seen a lot changes around the "kitchen". There has been tons of sewing for all the costume events, and for our recent hand-fasting. We had a perfect October day for a beautiful ritual. I dare say that my non-pagan family members did not expect such a ceremony. However, it was truly beautiful and everyone thought so, regardless of religious affiliation.

And, on a sad note, a few months ago my beloved black cat passed. Moonie was a loving cat, to me, and she has been very missed. She was getting on in years, as she was going on 10 years old. She was an indoor cat, however she expressed a wish to sit on the deck in her last few weeks of life. She didn't show any signs of anything being wrong until the final day or two, and then it was too late. My poor kitty! May she find the Summer Land warm, sunny and full of fluffy pillows just for her.

Happy Imbolc!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Imbolc. I had a realitively nice one. There was no baking this time around, as I was busy cleaning house, and busy playing Mom's Taxi. The youngest was at my mom's, and the teen with the attitude was at softball conditioning. I did light my candles when I go home, and took a moment of peace and quiet as I could find it. And trust me, in my house, that's a great feat unto itself. I think I will be baking this Saturday, as we are supposed to get hit with a winter storm come Friday and Saturday. Maybe baking will help remind spring that it needs to hurry up, even though that groundhog saw his shadow. Maybe some nice baked goods will help convince it to show up early anyway.

Well, until it's time to start my seedlings for the gardens, I must say ado!

Well, it has been forever since I have been able to blog. We have been settling further into the new house, cleaning out the garage so we can park in it, and getting ready for the holidays, and visitors from Montana. Here is the Christmas tree:

I still need to find my Yule candles and holders, and Yule log to burn, since I can actually have a Yule log for once.

Clearing the cobwebs

Wow! Has it been that long? (picks up old blog and dusts it off) A lot has happened since last August. I did end up canning jellies and pumpkin butter, which disappears at an unbelievable rate around here. Yule and Christmas came and went, and in mid-February we moved, again. But this time, we bought a house. What a lovely place. We painted the whole house before we moved in, that way it would ready. I painted the kitchen area a color called "Happy Camper Green". And on a shopping trip to Pearls of Wisdom I found the perfect Green Man plaque (the color is a little off in the pic on Amazon) to hang on the wall. The color of the green in the plaque matches the color of the walls to a "t". I also found a "Merry Meet" plaque to hang across from the front door, and a pentacle/tree of life plaque to hang at the end of the hallway. But, it's a much larger place, and we are much happier here. It has a good vibe to it, despite the shady past (drug dealers, wife beaters and such), and the neighborhood is much better than the house's past suggests. The only negative energy that seems to be in the house comes from the hormonal teenaged female in the house, and that's only on occasion. The neigbors are great (unlike the last set of neighbors who wouldn't have known manners if they had been smacked in the face with them), and we all watch out for each other. We have a fairly good sized backyard, with a pond surround by a Chinese Zen garden, a deck a big as the living room, and plenty of space to plant the flowers and herbs that I want. We pulled up the ornamental grass next to the front door, and I planted a pair of holly bushes. So, life is good. How is everyone else out there?

Can you feel it?

I can feel it on the wind. I can smell in the breeze. Fall is coming! I may have been born in the summer, but I love fall and winter. I am more than ready for the changing of the season. We are planning a fall camping trip, for when the days are cool, and the nights are even cooler. But in the mean time, I will busy myself with canning jellies and jams. Making and drying noodles. Sewing costumes for the upcoming Ohio Renaissance Festival. Knitting holiday gifts. Well, I will if I find the energy after work in the evenings and on weekends. Oh, how I long to be a housewife, again. The things I could accomplish. *sigh* But, I march on, with plans for this weekend to make some fresh bread, apple jelly, white grape jelly, pumpkin butter, whole wheat rotini noodles and home made alfredo sauce. Oh, and give the house a good "fall" cleaning. Now, let's see what unexpected plans pop up. hee hee!

Where did I leave the furniture polish?

Well, let's dust this blog off a little. Wow. It's been awhile since I've been in here. Please excuse the cobwebs in the corners. And it's time to get the besom to sweep out the dust. But do sit down, so you can rest, we can chat, and I tidy up a bit

These past months has seen alot of activity. I have moved. Katie has joined softball for another season. I've gotten another year older. My best friend had a baby, after more than 10 yrs of trying for another. My grandmother has passed. And I have inherited her dog. My cats aren't too pleased, but considering that they are bigger than she is, I think they'll get over it. I have started making the house more eco-friendly (no more paper towels, disposable cleaning clothes and such), and have gone back to making as much as I can from scratch. My latest accomplishment has been apple jelly, since I couldn't find any in the store that didn't contain high fructose corn syrup.

We've celebrated the Sabbats as best we could, either due to limited attendance, or limited funds, but we've had fun.

But, here's to the next full moon, as it's the next date to celebrate.

Busy, busy, busy

Wow! It's been a long time. It's been a very busy year, so far, and considering it's November already.

I do believe that I have everyone that is interested in the PIF Exchange. If you are one of the people for that, and I haven't contacted you, don't worry, I should be doing that as soon as I can. I'm clearing out a few projects, finishing charity knitting, and help my room mate slowly move out, but the dust should settle soon.

Anywho! I did celebrate Samhain, even if it was small this year. We watched the Ghost Hunter's live special from Waverly Hills, and Katie prepared a pumpkin bread for me. Here's a pic of the offerings, as meager as they were:

The wine is from my mom. It's her 2006 Plum wine, made from Japanese Table plums from the tree in what's left of their small orchard. Too bad that tree is dying off, because it produced some great plums and some awesome wine. I still have a bottle of the 2004 that is waiting for a major life event before I open it.

Ok, if I drop off the face of the Earth (again) for a while, it's because I am finishing the charity knitting and starting my Yule knitting.

Boy, that month got by me! Where did it go? I have missed blogging about the full moon past, and Lammas. I did celebrate both, but forgot pics and posts. For my ritual dinner the menu was as follows:

Corn cake (which the girls love)

Nothing fancy, but very filling and yummy. I'll post the corn cake recipe to my recipe page at a later date, as it's just about time to leave work and head out into the blazing heat. By the Goddess, I hope fall gets here real soon.

Full Moon Saturday, Henna Sunday & Pic Spam Monday

Since Saturday was a full moon, it was the perfect time to start making my Full Moon Cornbread.
And what goes better with cornbread, than a big ol' pot of beans, pinto beans. Here is a pic of the cornbread, hot out of the oven:

For the beans, I just used a medium size bag of pinto beans, boiled till they softened, added 1 ham hock and salt & pepper to taste. Some people add all kinds of things to their beans, but I love them simple. The only thing I was missing was some fresh green beans with a little bacon, salt and pepper cooked into them. And here is a pic of the cornbread cut, so you can see how it looks inside, since I use white cornmeal.


Now for Henna Sunday. Every summer, we love to paint ourselves with henna. We decided that yesterday was the perfect day for it. I packed up Annie, Katie went to her dad's, and headed off to Miss PJ's, with henna basket over my arm, sorta like Little Red Riding Hood. I took the left over beans and cornbread, and PJ made fried potatoes. Yum! Then, we got down to business. The first pic is of a Celtic Heart design. The arms belong to Katie, PJ and me:

We did several more that I don't have pictured, some of which was a small kitty on Annie's arm, Chinese characters on my left arm, and the same moon on Katie's leg, the only difference from mine is that she didn't want the clouds filled in.

Ritual Night

Ok, so things didn't go as they should. But, then again, they never do. I didn't get the cookies started last night, like I wanted to, because I didn't get in until 10 o'clock. Plus, when I went to get the stuffed shells that I wanted, the closest store didn't have any. S, I got some round cheese ravioli (for the Goddess aspect), and some square beef ravioli (for the God aspect), some 3 cheese marinara (the Triple Goddess aspect), and some strawberry wine (for summer). And I didn't get to make any fresh bread, so Texas toast it is. Below is a pic of the meager offerings.


Hopefully the next Sabbat ritual offerings will be more plentiful and season appropriate.

Happy Summer Solstice!

And may it be a good one for you! Today, here at work, it seems to have flown by without me. I guess that's what I get for leaving my broom at home again. Hee hee! I won't be able to preform my ritual this evening, as we have a softball game. So, on the way home from the game, I'll stop off at the store to pick up the few items that I need, and prepare anything that needs to chill when I get home. Then, as I have taken the day off of work tomorrow and Monday, I'll have plenty of time to run my errands, make dinner, and do rituals after dark. I have decided that I will make the almond crescent cookies and some Litha Sun cookies, as well as a pasta dish with marina sauce, and some home made bread. So, tonight's shopping list will consist of lemons, wine, and what ever I need for my pasta dish, which I think I'll make stuffed shells. That may make a good representation off the fertile and pregnant Goddess. I'll figure it out by then, as I still want to look through my recipes.

Speaking of recipes. I did start a page for my favorite recipes, it is Ramblings & Recipes of a true Kitchen Witch. I have already added a couple of recipes to the page. Have peek, and keep checking back. You never know. You may find something you like.

I'll post tomorrow after I'm done. And after that, I'll be relaxing until about Tuesday, as my birthday is Saturday, and I want to do nothing but relax and see what Mr. S has in store for me, since he's keeping most of this weekend's events secret. Darn him!
